Comments due Jan. 22 - Proposed MasterFormat Division 46 & Changes to Division 44

For more than two years, the MasterFormat Maintenance Task Team (MFMTT) has worked to improve MasterFormat’s treatment of subject matter relative to environmental construction, including water and wastewater treatment facilities. The draft revisions (PDF)  to MasterFormat are the result of the MFMTT-EEC collaboration. Given their interdependence, drafts of changes to both Divisions 44 and 46 are presented together.
Download the draft (PDF) .

The MFMTT has worked with:
  • The Environmental Engineers Coalition (EEC), comprised of engineers from thirteen large consulting engineering firms, each with significant practice in environmental engineering (collectively employing over 150,000 design professionals and responsible for approximately $5 billion in construction annually)
  • Three major environmental equipment manufacturers (collectively representing the Water and Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers Association (WWEMA)
The commentary period on this draft will close January 22, 2010. To submit comments to the MFMTT:

Include the phrase “Division 46 commentary” in the e-mail subject line or title of any commentary thread placed on the CSInet.org forum. All comments submitted will be considered in preparing revisions to this draft prior to publication.

CSI and Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) anticipate publishing an update to MasterFormat in spring 2010.

The EEC began its work in late 2006 and first presented its concerns with the way that MasterFormat dealt with water and wastewater treatment and other types of environmental construction, as well as thoughts on possible solutions, to members of the MFMTT at the 2007 CSI Convention in Baltimore. Shortly thereafter the EEC submitted a fleshed out proposal to the MFMTT for consideration. Work on refining the drafts continued as a collaborative effort of the EEC and MFMTT, and the final draft submitted for public commentary benefits from the enormous experience and corporate resources that members of both groups bring to the table.

The MFMTT and EEC believe that these changes will greatly benefit the industry and MasterFormat by improving the organization of projects and construction documentation for these important process facilities and other elements of environmental work. The MFMTT believes that these types of collaborations with interested, motivated, and informed industry groups are essential for continuing to keep MasterFormat relevant for its users, and hopes that this collaboration is the first of many to come.

CSI and CSC extend thanks to the following EEC members for their generous contribution to this endeavor:
